Crickets

Problem
Crickets are chirping in the home. These insects, which look like grasshoppers, are light to dark brown, ½ to ¾ inch long, and have long antennae that curve back along the sides of the body.

Analysis
(Gryllus and Acheta domesticus)
The two types of crickets that may invade the home are field crickets and house crickets. Field crickets usually live outdoors, feeding on vegetation and plant debris. In the fall, when their natural food supply fails, or during periods of heavy rainfall, they may invade buildings in search of food. Field crickets cannot reproduce in the home, and usually die by winter. House crickets, however, can survive and reproduce indoors. During the day, both types of crickets hide in dark, warm locations, such as behind baseboards, in closets, and in attics. Male crickets make a chirping sound by rubbing the file and scraper on their forewings together. Crickets may chew on fabrics and paper items, and large numbers of them may cause serious problems.

Solution
To control crickets outdoors, apply ORTHO Ant-Stop Ant Killer Dust, ORTHO Flea-B-Gon Outdoor Flea & Tick Killer, or ORTHO Diazinon Granules along the foundation of the house. To control crickets indoors, spray with ORTHO HI-POWER Ant, Roach & Spider Spray--Formula II or ORTHO Home Pest Insect Control. Remove dense vegetation and debris around the building foundation where crickets may hide. Seal openings around doors and windows. Apply a barrier spray around the house using diazinon.
